Micropulsed Laser Trabeculoplasty (MLT)

Glaucoma is a chronic and progressive eye condition that can lead to irreversible vision loss, caused by increased intraocular pressure. In Europe, glaucoma is the second most common cause of irreversible blindness after age-related macular degeneration.

A dangerous aspect of glaucoma is that, at first, the patient feels no obvious symptoms and the disease progresses slowly and painlessly to the advanced stages. This is why regular eye check-ups, using modern equipment, are essential for early detection and monitoring the progression of the disease.

The main cause of increased intraocular pressure is insufficient drainage of intraocular fluid, rarely its overproduction. Studies have shown that glaucoma has an inflammatory component, and that the structures of the anterior chamber angle, through which fluid is removed, deteriorate over time. This phenomenon is aggravated by conditions such as pseudoexfoliative syndrome, in which atypical proteins and pigment accumulate in the ocular drainage system, blocking it and destabilizing eye pressure.

Micropulsed laser trabeculoplasty is a modern and effective treatment method for glaucoma. This involves the use of a micropulsed laser which, without causing thermal damage, activates the natural cleaning processes of the trabecular meshwork, removing protein and pigment deposits and improving intraocular fluid drainage.

Treatment is effective in primary open-angle glaucoma regardless of the degree of pigmentation of the eye. In addition, the laser stimulates the trabecular meshwork’s natural regeneration and phagocytosis processes, helping to maintain normal intraocular pressure.

Advantages of the procedure

The treatment requires no special training and is performed on an outpatient basis under local anesthesia with drops. The patient can return to their daily activities immediately after surgery. The procedure is painless and takes just a few minutes, during which the patient may only see a few flashes of light. After treatment, your doctor will prescribe anti-inflammatory drops to reduce the risk of inflammation.

The hypotensive effect is maintained for several months and, depending on the course of the disease, treatment may be repeated.
