Spasm of accommodation

Our eyes are a sophisticated optical mechanism, able to adapt quickly at different distances to give us a clear image. But, like any complex mechanism, this accommodation function can be disturbed. Accommodation spasm, also known as “false nearsightedness,” is an increasingly common condition, particularly among young people, who are faced with intense visual demands. Accommodation spasm occurs when the eye muscles responsible for adjusting focus fail to relax effectively. Normally, when we look up close, the ciliary muscles contract to adjust the lens and focus the image. However, after a prolonged period of visual strain, these muscles do not relax properly when we shift our gaze to a distant object, resulting in blurred distance vision and, in some cases, headaches or red eyes. Why does this happen? In an age where most of our daily activities involve digital devices, our eyes are exposed to a huge amount of near visual strain without the necessary breaks. Dim artificial light also contributes to the increased incidence of this type of spasm. This condition is more often specific to children and adolescents, who are typically developing and whose school and recreational activities involve intensive eye use. Prevention and Management of Accommodation Spasm: Effective Measures
Early recognition of accommodation spasm is essential. An accurate diagnosis is usually made by the application of drops that relax the eye muscles and allow accurate assessment of refraction. Also, regular breaks during prolonged visual activities – every 20-30 minutes – and eye exercises can prevent the spasm from recurring. Optical correction can play an important role, especially in patients with farsightedness. Near-vision glasses help reduce visual strain and prevent spasm. It is crucial to assess both the true refraction of the eye and any changes in accommodative behavior at each ophthalmologic consultation. Therefore, the ophthalmologic consultation should not be limited to the measurement of visual acuity and should also include additional investigations. At Visus Clinic, we ensure that every patient receives the attention and care needed to combat such conditions by offering modern and personalized solutions. With a careful approach and state-of-the-art technology, we focus on preserving long-term eye health.
